Illustrated Glossary of Organic Chemistry

Teflon: Trade name for the material formed by polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (the monomer). Also called poly(tetrafluoroethylene) or PTFE. Noted for its low friction, nonstick properties (due to high hydrophobicity), and high chemical resistance.

Tetrafluoroethylene (perfluoroethylene),
the monomer.

Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (Teflon),
a polymer.

Hydrofluoric acid corrodes glass, so it is stored
in bottles made of teflon or other plastics.
