Per acetic acid (peroxy acetic acid): A peracid derived from acetic acid. An oxidant; converts an alkene to an epoxide, and a thioether to a sulfoxide, and then to a sulfone.

Per acetic acid (CH₃CO₃H) oxidizes cyclohexene to the corresponding epoxide. This oxidation reduces per acetic acid to acetic acid (CH₃CO₂H).

Per acetic acid oxidizes dimethyl sulfide to dimethylsulfoxide, and then to dimethyl sulfone.
