Illustrated Glossary of Organic Chemistry

Peracetic acid (peroxyacetic acid): A peracid derived from acetic acid. An oxidant; converts an alkene to an epoxide, and a thioether to a sulfoxide, and then to a sulfone.

Molecular structure of peracetic acid.

Peracetic acid (CH3CO3H) oxidizes cyclohexene to the corresponding epoxide. This oxidation reduces peracetic acid to acetic acid (CH3CO2H).

Peracetic acid oxidizes dimethyl sulfide to dimethylsulfoxide, and then to dimethylsulfone.
