Sigma electron (σ electron): An electron that resides in a sigma bond molecular orbital.

The carbon-hydrogen single bonds of ethylene each have one pair of sigma electrons (shown in red). The carbon-carbon double bond has one pair of sigma electrons and one pair of pi electrons (shown in blue).
