Illustrated Glossary of Organic Chemistry

Shielded (upfield): A nucleus whose chemical shift has been decreased due to addition of electron density, magnetic induction, or other effects.

In this simulated 1H-NMR spectrum of 2-ethylphenol the 1.2 ppm triplet is more shielded (lower chemical shift; more upfield) than the 6.0 ppm singlet. Click on the image for a larger version.
