Illustrated Glossary of Organic Chemistry

Neighbor: In NMR spectroscopy, an atom within the same molecule, but other than the atom in question. Neighboring atoms may or may not be equivalent, which is the basis for spin-spin coupling and splitting patterns. In general, the relationship between neighbors becomes less important as the number of bonds between them increases. Metaphor: The people that live around you are your neighbors. Your relationships with people who live close to you are often stronger than with people who live further away.

In ethyl chloride, Ha has two proton neighbors (Hb and Hc) with which it is equivalent and two proton neighbors (Hd and He) with which it is not equivalent.
