Long range coupling: In NMR spectroscopy, coupling between nuclei that are separated by more than three bonds.

Coupling of H_a with H_d (if present) is long range coupling, because these protons are separated by four sigma bonds. Coupling between H_a and H_b or H_c is not long range coupling because these protons are separated by less than four bonds.
