Dieckmann condensation: An intramolecular version of the Claisen condensation reaction.


In this example of the Dieckmann condensation reaction, dimethyl adipate is reacted with sodium methoxide (a strong base) in methanol (the solvent), followed by aqueous acid, to produce methyl 2-oxocyclopentane-1-carboxylate, a cyclic β-ketoester.
