Carbon tetrachloride (tetrachloromethane; carbon tet): A nonpolar (ε = 2.2) aprotic solvent of molecular formula CCl4. Formerly of wide use as a laboratory solvent, a dry cleaning solvent, and in fire extinguishers, but now mostly disused due to its suspected carcinogenicity.
