Illustrated Glossary of Organic Chemistry

Beta-diketone (β-diketone): A molecule containing two ketones separated by one carbon.

General β-diketone structure.

Pentane-2,4-dione
(Acetylacetone)

3-Methyl-1-phenylhexane-2,4-dione
Typical β-diketones.

Methyl acetoacetate (shown here) is a β-ketoester. It is not a β-diketone because one of the carbonyl-containing functional groups is an ester instead of a ketone.
