Aldonic acid: A molecule similar to an aldose, except that the aldehyde has been oxidized to a carboxylic acid.

Oxidation (with aqueous bromine) of the aldehyde of D-glucose (an aldohexose) produces D-gluconic acid (an aldonic acid).
